Life can change in an instant. I know that better than most.
I was 27 when my world turned upside down. My dad, who had spent years battling a chronic neurological disease, passed away in his sleep. That same year, my mom—who had been full of life, running races, and thriving in her career—suffered a near-fatal brain aneurysm. Overnight, she was permanently disabled, unable to walk or speak the way she once had. My sister and I suddenly found ourselves as full-time caregivers, pushing both of our parents in wheelchairs, wondering how did we end up here?
My dad had a small life insurance policy, but it wasn’t enough. There was no long-term care strategy, no financial preparation for my mom’s sudden disability. Just a harsh reality that left us scrambling.
That’s why I do what I do.

Last year, recently after I became full time caregiver for my mom, one evening I couldn't find a fill-in for me so I ended up taking my mom to see me play drums at a small outdoor restaurant in North Richland Hills with two of my bandmates. She ended up having a nice time out! As a caregiver for your mom, balancing a career, hobbies, and time for yourself can be a challenge but you do what you have to to make it work. When I'm helping families be better prepared for the future, it's coming from a place of caring because I've lived it too.
This picture here was taken of what was likely one of the highlights of my dad's life during a family vacation to Baja, Mexico in 1991 during the week of the Solar Eclipse. I turned 7 down there on July 9, and the eclipse was on the 11th. It's so interesting how you can remember things that happened on vacation when you were 7, but then other times struggle to remember the day to day moments that comprise the majority of time we spend with loved ones. This is why it's important for me to help my clients be financially responsible; so they can position themselves to take guilt-free vacations with their families. Why? Because those are the moments you'll carry with you forever - and I'd love to help you create more of them.
Music has been a big passion of mine for as long as I can remember. I commandeered my parents' The Best of Jukebox Rock CD set when I was about 8 years old, and that became my first deep dive into what we used to call "oldies" back in the '80s and '90s. (Now I hear people calling Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Britney Spears "oldies" — eye roll.) From there, my musical tastes broadened quite a bit, and these days you can find me behind the drums in at least a couple of bands around DFW, playing at local venues.
I'm perpetually grateful that I can still make time for music while making sure my mom gets the care she needs. And hey, having to turn around and hand all my big tips to the fill-in caregiver is a small price to pay for rock and roll — because life’s too short not to keep the beat going.

These are the moments we rarely talk about - but they're real. Being prepared early can change the role you play for your loved ones, from full-time caregiver to care coordinator.
Aspen is my loyal companion through all of life's ups and downs. She's a daily reminder to pause, breathe, and appreciate the quiet moments - even on the challenging days.
